It’s everywhere! Red flowers, pink hearts, white frilly laces. Chocolate seems to be overflowing everywhere. Tiny candy hearts are proclaiming BE MINE or U R A CUTIE. Stuffed animals are holding hearts saying, “I Love You!”
Yep, it’s that time of the year. Valentine’s Day is coming. (For you husbands out there, it’s this coming Wednesday. Don’t say I didn’t remind you!)
This day, like most holidays, usually brings about a mixture of emotions for different people. For singles, it is usually The Most Hated Day Ever. For husbands and boyfriends, it’s an Important Errand To Run, albeit one that will have dire consequences if they forget to do something special. For wives and girlfriends, it’s an exciting day, filled with wonder what their significant other has planned. For children, it means they get to give and receive tiny cards with cartoon characters or comic super heroes from their classmates.
I think Hallmark has it wrong when it strongly emphasizes just romantic love for this day. Despite where a person is in their life, Valentine’s Day is and should be about the celebration of love in its manifold forms. Family, friends, significant others and, yes, God.
God’s ultimate valentine to the world trumps any box of chocolates, cards or dozens of roses. The Bible records it beautifully in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
I can’t word it any better. God loved us so much that He sacrificed His ONLY Son on the cross just so we would be able to live in eternity and not die. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.
One thing I’ve always liked about February is that it always seemed, to me, like one of the most warmest month of the year, despite it being one of the most coldest meterologically. This is because of Valentine’s Day, a day that is made possible because of God’s ultimate and eternal love for us. No matter where we are in life, with or without romantic love, we are NEVER without love because God is always with us and ALWAYS WILL LOVE US, no matter what. Hold that truth close to your heart.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
