I hope you have been enjoying Pastor Ron’s CENTERED sermon series for the past few Sundays. I know I have been challenged by the truth he has been sharing from the book of Colossians. There is one truth that I have been especially grappling with these past few days, and it’s from Colossians 3:5, “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” In his discussion of this passage, he called this process mortification, which is defined as “practicing ascetic discipline or self-denial of the body and its appetites.”  → Read more...

He who walks with the wise grows wise,     but a companion of fools suffers harm.                                                  – Proverbs 13:20 Whether or not we realize it, we are shaped by our surroundings and the people that are around us. This truth and the proverb mentioned above shouldn’t be surprising, but it’s amazing how we forget how much influence we have on each other. I was reminded of this truth earlier this week after talking with a friend who has strayed away from the faith.  → Read more...

Well, that was quick. Today, I find myself yet another year older. It seems like I just had my birthday a couple of days ago. I suppose the old adage holds true: time does seem to go by faster the older you get. Birthdays are a curious human phenomenon. I don’t think any other creature that populates God’s lovely Earth keeps track of how old they are and how a year has passed them by. If that were true, what would you get a gorilla or a dolphin for their birthdays?  → Read more...

Complete Obedience Required

For the past few weeks I have been struggling with obedience. More specifically, my obedience to God. Truthfully, I don’t obey Him completely; only when it works for me. In July, my wife and I got a dog from a friend of a friend who wanted to give him a better home since they felt they could not adequately give him the fullest care that he deserved. Any pet owner can tell you what fun it is to own an animal, and in my completely biased opinion, dogs are the best.  → Read more...

The Permanence of Truth

Last week, I wrote about the sticky situation that Tiger Woods suddenly found himself in, having all of his hidden deceptions quickly destroyed by news organizations and tabloids digging for the truth. In Proverbs 12:19, Solomon wrote, “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.” Tiger–and to be sure, the rest of us–discover this proverb to be literally true. Often times when we lie, we find that our lies quickly fall apart when confronted with the truth.  → Read more...

I don’t really follow golf. Golf, to me, has always been one of those sports, like bowling and darts, that’s more fun to play than to watch. But even I, someone who doesn’t really know the difference between a sand wedge and a lob wedge, know about Tiger Woods and his innate, amazing ability with a golf club. People who don’t normally watch golf would watch him play. Television ratings for a tournament that Tiger is in are higher than a similarly televised tournament without him in it, something that has come to be called “the Tiger Woods effect.”  → Read more...

Rhetorical Rhetoric

Words have power. We discover this axiom at a very young age. Perhaps at the schoolyard during recess when someone taunts us or when we’re the taunter. We discover very quickly words can cut, wound, and be used as effectively and ruthlessly as a sword can be. Inversely, we discover, also around the same time, that, in addition to the wounding power of words, words can be used to heal, comfort and dispense hope. And somewhere in that gaping chasm between hurt and hope, words have the power to do everything imaginable.  → Read more...
