A Slice of Truth, Devotionals

It’s been said that the Bible has a “ring of truth to it.” In other words, the personal experiences, lessons, teachings, and history contained within the 66 books of the Bible contains truths that are observable, testable and aligns with our reality. If we are careful students of Truth and test it with the world around us, then we can start to build healthy worldviews. Every now and then, I want to put the spotlight on one thing that I notice that is true about our world and show what the Bible says about it.  → Read more...

This is a guest post written by my wife, Amanda, about a month and a half ago. I thought it was lovely and resonated with me. I hope you think the same. -Matt There’s a lot of things that I’ve noticed about the human experience since I’ve had a baby. My son is now 9 months old, and as curious and mobile as any parent would love or dread, depending on how you look at it.  → Read more...

“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.” – Exodus 20:7 When people ask me how I know that there’s a God or whether this Bible book thing is true, I tell them that I pay very close attention to the world around me. There are ordinary signs that one can easily miss if one is not looking for them. One of them, for me, is that there is a distinction that exists between the sacred and the profane.  → Read more...

I’m tired of me. I’m tired of how petty, vain, selfish and needy I am. I am also insecure, inconsiderate, incapable and indulgent. I am quick to judge, slow to forgive. Sometimes I do the things I should, but more often than not, I do the things that I shouldn’t. The things I should let go, I don’t; the things I shouldn’t let go, I do. My mistakes, my sin, my folly, they all dog me, nipping at my heels, reminding me of a life lived imperfectly.  → Read more...

As [Jesus] went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.” (John 9:1-3) One of the wonders of reading the Bible is that you’ll come across something that maybe you’ve come across before, but this time, it sticks out.  → Read more...

The sun was hot, just like a normal day, its heat radiating mercilessly down on the earth. There was a gentle breeze from a lake in the distance, but it didn’t help cool anyone down from the scorching sun. That’s why it was better to be here, near a pool in the shade provided by a cloth cover that was supported by circle of colonnades. Each equally spaced column surrounded this pool like Roman sentries, standing tall and proud.  → Read more...

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.  → Read more...

Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee, and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he had performed on the sick. When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.  → Read more...

Nine years ago, I had the fantastic opportunity to go to Italy when I attended Trinity Christian College. It was a trip that’s never really left me, staying close to my heart. We started our journey in Milan and worked our way south to Rome through cities like Venice, Florence and Naples. We walked through and touched walls of buildings that were hundreds of years older than America. If there was ever a time that I wished that walls could talk, it was then!  → Read more...

Last week, I wrote about the sticky situation that Tiger Woods suddenly found himself in, having all of his hidden deceptions quickly destroyed by news organizations and tabloids digging for the truth. In Proverbs 12:19, Solomon wrote, “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.” Tiger–and to be sure, the rest of us–discover this proverb to be literally true. Often times when we lie, we find that our lies quickly fall apart when confronted with the truth.  → Read more...
