Last week, I talked about the fact that without Jesus as our savior and mediator, we cannot reach and communicate with God and thus ultimately fully worship Him. Worship is something that I have struggled with for a long time. For me, and I think for a lot of people too, it is hard to be reverent to something that you don’t see or fully grasp.

That has been changing lately. My wife and I have a favorite show that we like to watch on the History Channel. It’s a documentary show called “The Universe” which is exactly what you would think it is about. Every episode talks about a different part of the cosmos that we live in. For example, one week might talk about Jupiter, another week’s focus would be on black holes.

We live in an amazing universe where there are things that are beyond imagination. The scale outside our planet is enormous. There are planets, stars and assortment of things out there that are in sizes and distances that are hard to fully grasp. There are stars out there that are about 1,000 to 2,000 times the size of our sun, if not more. Check out this short YouTube video of a computer generated scale of currently known stars and planets. Compared to VV Cephei, the largest known star, our planet is nothing, not even an ant. To add insult to injury, think about the size of the galaxies that encompass even the largest of the stars.

Feel really, really small yet?

Every time I watch “The Universe,” I end up continually amazed on how little we understand the scale of the universe that we live in. Every time I manage to wrap my limited human mind around how awesomely big something is, I think of how God created it. If it is that big, then our Creator is bigger. The scale of the universe causes me to get a glimpse of how large, divine and wonderful God is, and in response, the only possible response, I can only fall on my knees in awe and worship the Creator who created all of this and yet looks out for tiny you and me. To know and see God and worship Him, all you need to do is look around, and yes, up.

“But ask the animals, and they will teach you,
     or the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,
     or let the fish of the sea inform you.
Which of all these does not know
     that the hand of the LORD has done this?
In his hand is the life of every creature
     and the breath of all mankind.”
                                                  –Job 12:7-10

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

-Matt
