It’s been hot for the past few days. The humidity makes it feel like we’re all swimming in hot water every time we walk outside. At times like this, it’s easy to stay inside and crank up the air conditioning and watch TV or something of the sort. I did not do much of that when I went to Kentucky this past weekend for a family reunion.

All of the days I was there, the temperatures were hot, with the heat index hovering around over 100 degrees. Just standing outside in the sun made you sweat and, boy, could you feel the sun really beat down on you if you stayed in it too long. We all walked around like panting dogs, our tongues sticking out.

But, even the heat could not mask God’s marvelous creation. We went down to a part of Kentucky called the “Village Between the Lakes,” which is an area that is, well, literally between two lakes that are connected to each other. Both lakes are simply massive and feed into the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers. We had the occasion to take a speedboat out and just drove around for a while. With the roiling sun hanging high in the blue, cloudless sky, the lake sprawled out before us, its sides flanked with green trees and vegetation. It was not hard to sit back and marvel at the majesty of it all, especially with the wind cooling us off as we effortlessly sliced through the glassy water.

As I sat on the forward bow of the boat, I couldn’t help but think about what it was like for the people who lived in the area long before modern civilization arose. They lived within nature. Their day began at sunrise and concluded at sunset. They fished and hunted daily for sustenance while planting and harvesting crops. They were able to enjoy every day the sights and the smells that I was enjoying at that moment, which was only because I was on vacation. I couldn’t help but notice the awkward dichotomy because pioneers and those who went before us never took vacations just to get back to nature. It was their whole life. But meanwhile, here am I who lead the sort of life where I actually have to remove myself from my house and my everyday life just to experience nature and its beauty.

As modern civilization marches onward with its technological progress, it increasingly isolates us from nature and from earth and from creation itself, thus it also isolates us from God. As much as I love air conditioning and my Nintendo Wii, I would easily trade them in for the ability to live in a world that constantly reminds me of God’s providence and His hand in creating the majestic world that we live in.

May God remind you through nature who He is and the joy that He took in creating nature and the world that we live in.

– Matt
