Last week, I wrote about the sticky situation that Tiger Woods suddenly found himself in, having all of his hidden deceptions quickly destroyed by news organizations and tabloids digging for the truth. In Proverbs 12:19, Solomon wrote, “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.” Tiger–and to be sure, the rest of us–discover this proverb to be literally true. Often times when we lie, we find that our lies quickly fall apart when confronted with the truth. The truth refuses to be buried and is invulnerable to our attempts of dismantling it. It is, in a way, invincible, immortal, and yes, eternal.
It is precisely because of these qualities of truth that we can have the absolute confidence that everything that is revealed in the Bible and in the creation around us is true. Anyone with a tender heart can sense that a tugging that tells us that this world isn’t all there is, that we’re meant for more. Anyone who marvels at the complexity of even the simplest organisms realizes that nothing was accidental and completely designed. Anyone with a discerning eye can see the creation groaning under the leaden weight of sin. Anyone who reads the Bible realizes the profundity of the words in its pages. The truth about the world, both of its origin and its sinfulness, is right in front of our eyes and it won’t be going anywhere any time soon.
I don’t know about you, but the permanence of the truth gives me hope and confidence. If Christianity wasn’t the truth, but rather a cleverly packaged bunch of lies, it would have fallen apart a long time ago. However, this plainly isn’t the case. I’ve read news stories of disputed historical references in the Bible ending up being completely accurate and even revising what we know about the area at the time. Time and time again, the Bible and its teachings about human nature, morality, sin, depravity, evil, goodness, sex, responsibility, money, and numerous other things have been tested and have always survived with truth on its side. This doesn’t surprise anyone who knows God because by His nature, He IS Truth incarnate. He cannot lie nor does He even want to. This is why Jesus, verifying his deity, said in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life.”
This is how I know what I’ve learned about God, Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross is the truth. This is how I know his blood was spilled for a very real thing. This is how I have the confidence to say to those who think Christianity is a fairy tale, “No, it is not.” This is what allows all of us to be able to stand with the Psalmist and say to God, “Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell. I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your laws.” (Psalm 25:5, 43:4, 119:30)
