It’s interesting: the process of aging, getting older, usually means that when you hear the same stories that you’ve heard before, sometimes you discover something that you hadn’t noticed before. Life has given you a different perspective from when you heard the story originally. Nowhere else, for me at least, has this held true than the Christmas story. By age 30 – if you’ve been a life-long Christian like I am – the story gets very familiar.  → Read more...

My goal this year is to slow down and take a breath every now and then and renew and refocus my mind on what’s really important in this season: God and family, whether it is by blood or by the family we’ve built for ourselves through friends. So, for the month of December, this space will provide all of us with reminders of what’s really important this month. This week’s theme is: Remember The One Who Came.  → Read more...

You can read Part I here. Last time, I talked about how our lives ought to be a legacy for Christ, and that when the time comes to go home to the Lord, we ought to leave no doubt about what we believed and where we are going after slipping through the door of death. We could do this by living a life based on the Bible, working hard, living humbly, being wise, and generally living with integrity.  → Read more...

For the past year, my wife and I have been the proud parents of a seven-year-old silky terrier named Melvin. We got him last July through a friend of a friend. Melvin’s past owners realized that, thanks to two newborn children, their life was incompatible with owning a dog who needed exercise and attention. They felt that the best thing they could do was to find him a good home. Upon hearing this from her friend, my friend who knew my family used to have a silky terrier contacted me and asked if I was interested.  → Read more...

As [Jesus] went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.” (John 9:1-3) One of the wonders of reading the Bible is that you’ll come across something that maybe you’ve come across before, but this time, it sticks out.  → Read more...

It’s been a tough holiday season for me so far. Well, that’s not really true. I’m fine, but there are a few friends of mine who are going through some emotional turmoil from a wide range of events including losses of jobs and divorces. One friend of mine didn’t get a Christmas tree this year as she and her husband needed money for groceries. It’s always easier to read about things like that happening to other people in the newspaper or hear it on the television.  → Read more...

Complete Obedience Required

For the past few weeks I have been struggling with obedience. More specifically, my obedience to God. Truthfully, I don’t obey Him completely; only when it works for me. In July, my wife and I got a dog from a friend of a friend who wanted to give him a better home since they felt they could not adequately give him the fullest care that he deserved. Any pet owner can tell you what fun it is to own an animal, and in my completely biased opinion, dogs are the best.  → Read more...

dwell (verb) To live as a resident; reside. To exist in a given place or state: dwell in joy. To fasten one’s attention: kept dwelling on what went wrong. Over the past few days as Calvary’s staff has been talking about the vision of Calvary as a place where God heals people from the hurts they have suffered through their lives, especially over things that have happened in the past, I’ve been thinking about the meaning of the phrase “dwelling in the past.”  → Read more...

Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee, and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he had performed on the sick. When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.  → Read more...

History. For most people, it’s a topic that’s akin to watching paint dry: tedious, boring, and ultimately pointless. “Why should I learn about George Washington crossing the Delaware or about a Macedonian named Alexander the Great who lived close to 2,400 years ago?” For most of us, we feel anonymous, insulated and not part of the history-making process. We’re not a Washington, Jefferson, or Lincoln. For that matter, we’re not even close to or work in places where “history” is made, like the White House.  → Read more...
