Seven years ago, on this day, which happened to be a Tuesday then, the world watched in horror as two planes crashed into each of the two World Trade Center buildings. Then it was whispered, there was another attack at the Pentagon. And then there was a plane crash in a field in Pennsylvania, could this have been related?

I remember that day as clearly as I remember yesterday. I’ve been told from people who were born and old enough on Friday, November 22, 1963, that they remember exactly where they were when they had heard that President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated. Just like then, this was my generation’s defining moment. Most everyone remembers what they were doing when they heard about the attacks.

I was in my morning class, my senior year of college, when the class was interrupted by another professor who poked his head in our classroom. Details were still sketchy, so our professor dismissed our class and we walked down to the student lounge where the news were all talking about it, complete with video of the smoking towers.

It was when I heard about the Pentagon attacks that I became genuinely frightened. There were people who were plotting against our government! What else was going to happen?

A lot has since then. Too much to fit in the small space I have here this week. Even after major soul-rending events like Kennedy’s assassination and Columbine, we were able to pick up the pieces and move on. In the ensuing days and years after 9/11, however, the world just hasn’t seemed the same since. Words like terrorism, privacy, torture, and national security entered the national lexicon in a vastly different–and scary–light. Planes were no longer just a means of transportation; they were high-velocity weapons. The world began to look sinister because on that day innocence was abruptly taken from us, felled by people whose agenda was to promote terror and chaos.

Seven years later, the wounds still hurt, the echoes still reverberate loudly, but we don’t despair because we have hope. Hope that one day yet to be announced, Christ himself will come down to the earth and…

“At that time I will gather you;
at that time I will bring you home.
I will give you honor and praise
among all the peoples of the earth
when I restore your fortunes
before your very eyes,”
says the LORD.
–Zephaniah 3:20

Until then, no matter what happens, we keep our eyes skyward and pray and wait for that glorious day!

See you next week and may God bless you this week!

– Matt
