Living For Tomorrow
Last week, I mentioned that the staff at Calvary have been reading a book together called Crazy Love by Francis Chan. I said that this book contains some of the simplest, but most powerful theology that I’ve encountered. One of the reasons for this is that Francis’ writings have a deep scriptural truth to it. He just doesn’t use scripture to back up what he’s saying, he also sometimes quotes other Christian thinkers and theologians. One of them is C.S. → Read more...
Community, Pt. IV
Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen community being born, how it benefits us in small groups, and it being alive in the church. Today, we’re going to conclude by looking at the eternal nature of community. I’ve written many times about how Randy Alcorn’s book Heaven has impacted my philosophy and my daily outlook on life. In one of the areas that impacted me the most was the truth that we will find and know the ones that we’ve grown to love and befriended here. → Read more...
Why We Fight
We don’t think of our daily life as a battle, but it is. The Bible clearly teaches that there is a spiritual warfare for all of the souls of humanity. You can’t get much clearer than Ephesians 6:10-13: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. → Read more...
Planning Our Time Now For Eternity
Everybody knows what it feels like to not have time for everything they want to do. There are so many books to read, movies to watch, places to explore, music to listen to, games to play, food to discover, not to mention all the things you need to get done at work and at home. Time feels like an enemy, always parceling out JUST enough minutes in the day or days in the week to get some things done, but not all of it. → Read more...
Community of Believers
In my reading time, I’ve been reading the book Heaven by Randy Alcorn. (A brief digression: This fantastic book is the subject of one of the classes premiering next Thursday as part of The Core. Pastor Howard will be teaching this class, using this book. If you’re interested, sign up online by visiting our website at www.calvaryop.org.) Heaven is a scholarly and fascinating dissection of what the Bible says about, well, Heaven. The author, Randy Alcorn, paints a beautiful and exciting picture of our future home that is well-researched and well-written with a lot of Biblical support in it. → Read more...
Zoning Christianity
Last week I talked about a book I was reading that discussed the coming end times framing them through current events and biblical prophecy. One of the things that has been on my mind ever since picking up the book is the fact that we shouldn’t be separating our secular and religious life into different, distinct zones. This has been nagging me for a couple of weeks now, which I definitely interpret as the Holy Spirit that dwells in me tugging on my conscience, trying to reveal a truth about my life to me. → Read more...
And Heav’n and Nature Sing
Last week, I talked about the fact that without Jesus as our savior and mediator, we cannot reach and communicate with God and thus ultimately fully worship Him. Worship is something that I have struggled with for a long time. For me, and I think for a lot of people too, it is hard to be reverent to something that you don’t see or fully grasp. That has been changing lately. My wife and I have a favorite show that we like to watch on the History Channel. → Read more...

Matt
The other day I came across an article in which the British actor Stephen Fry was interviewed. In it, the staunch atheist was asked what he would say to God if he was “confronted with God.” At first, his answer made me sad because I really like him as an actor. I first became aware of him through his very funny collaboration with Hugh Laurie (“House, M.D.”) in Jeeves and Wooster, their adaptation of P.G. Wodehouse’s series of short stories of a hapless aristocrat and his wise butler. → Read more...
